January 2012
The Spartans brought the New Year in with a bang, as the men's basketball played a New Year's Day game at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Spartans battled back from a halftime deficit to secure the win. Two weeks later, the Spartans came back to Maryland, taking on Coppin State and Morgan State. NSU men won both games in front of festive crowd of Spartans. The Morgan State game even went to double overtime! December 2011 The Prince George's County Maryland Chapter (PGCMDC) was active during this holiday season. Thanks to the generosity of our members, we raised over $300 in support of the Capitol Area Foodbank and the Marine Corps Toys for Tots programs. Also, we held our annual fellowship dinner at Gunning's Seafood in Hanover, MD. We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season with their family and friends. November 2011 November was a very busy month for PGCMDC. On November 5th we participated in a college fair at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville. There Spartans talked to prospective students about their experiences in attending NSU, collected initial interest cards and answered any questions the students had. In addition, the chapter began their annual holiday donation drive to support the Capitol Area Food Bank and Toys for Tots. November also saw area Spartans gather at Morgan State University to watch the team win their first MEAC football championship. Following the games there was a celebration party at Alonzo's Restaurant. October 2011 Spartans held a viewing party at Buffalo Wild Wings in Bowie to watch the NSU football team compete against Bethune Cookman. September 2011 The Prince George's County Maryland Chapter (PGCMDC) along with the Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Military Alumni chapters particiapted in a welcome reception for NSU's 5th president, Dr. Tony Atwater. The President spoke about his goals for NSU, and how the alumni can assist the school. Area Spartans also gathered at the President's Sports Bar in downtown DC for a post-game celebration after the NSU-Howard football game. August 2011 NSU alumni came out to enjoy a night of baseball as the Washington Nationals took on the Philadelphia Phillies. Unfortunately, a huge rain storm delayed the game for two hours, but it still turned out to be a great evening for fellowship. July 2011 Members of the Prince George's County Maryland Chapter (PGCMDC) attended the annual NSUAA Leadership Conference. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the alumni association, and the conference was hosted jointly by the Hampton Roads area chapters. PGCMDC also held our Annual Summer Social/Bowling Party fundraiser at the AMF Lanes in College Park. Area Spartans enjoyed a great evening of bowling and fun. During the event, the chapter also held a raffle. Upon completion of his studies, Joshua hopes to teach music education in the pubic school system. Congratulations to Joshua, and we wish him will in his academic pursuits. April 2011 More than 80 NSU alumni, faculty, staff and friends gathered at a reception with Acting President Kim Luckes. The purpose of the reception was to provide alumni with a great opportunity to meet new Spartans while strengthening their NSU networks. The PGCMDC also participated in the Make-A-Connection Presidential Tour event in Greenbelt, Maryland. This invitation-only event brought academically high-achieving prospective students together with Luckes, the University's deans, prominent alumni and current students for an evening of information. These students also mixed, mingled and walked away with more than $12,000 in scholarships February 2011 PGCMDC finalized the requirements for its merit based scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. January 2011 PGCMDC cheered on the NSU men's basketball team in a nationally televised game against the defending conference champion, Morgan State University. Following the game, local Spartans and those that travelled from Hampton Roads met at the Greene Turtle Sports Bar in Towson for fellowship, enjoying the food and talking about the history of Norfolk State. December 2010 PGCMDC would like to thank those that donated to the holiday fundraiser. Through your generosity we were able to raise $205 dollars to assist those in need in our community. The funds were split between two organizations, with $100 going to the Capitol Area Foodbank and $105 being given to the Toys for Tots organization. Way to show that Spartans care about those in our community. BEHOLD!!! November 13, 2010 The PGCMDC participated in the Black College Expo held at the University of Maryland, College Park.
